Non Letters and Numbers.

The usual word for anything which is not a letter or a number is called a character. Below is a list of them and what they are called. Hold down Shift to get the symbol on the top of the key.

1 ! Exclamation Mark


2 "Inverted" Inverted Commas


3 £ Pound Sign


4 $ Ä Dollar Euro


5 % Percentage


6 ^ Caret or Circumflex


7 & Ampersand

8 * Asterisk

9 ( Open Brackets

0 ) Close Brackets

- _ Minus Underscore

= +Equals Plus


Backspace (back delete) this delete the letter before the cursor.


Tab (double arrow) this jumps to the next box on the internet, in Excel and other applications.


CAPS LOCK This makes all of your letters capitals when you type. There is a little light to show you when this is on.


Shift (up Arrow) This makes letters capital and selects the upper symbol on a key.


Ctrl (Short for Control). This is used for Shortcut keys.


Windows Button This launches your Start Menu.


Windows + M This minimizes all of your windows (or shows your Desktop)


Alt This is used to Alter the functions of other keys.

Space Bar


Alt Gr This is equivalent to doing Ctrl + Alt.

/ ? Forward Slash Question Mark


; : Semi Colon Colon


' @ Apostrophe At


# ~ Hash or Sharp Tilde (Pronounced Tilda)
